CA$70.00
A mix of Scottish and Acadian cultures, a mix of the Island’s farming and fishing history awaits!
Your first stop will be at the Knit Pickers studio, located just minutes away from Cavendish Beach and nestled in the rolling hills of Mayfield.  Learning to knit has never been so easy! Margaret, an internationally recognized knitter, and weaver, will share with you the tips and techniques to knit a perfect hat and scarf. You’ll wind your wool, cast on your first project and try your hand at a few different stitches on an old-style knitting loom.  And – you will take home your own wooden knitting loom which has been hand-made in PEI.
Your next stop is a short jaunt down the road to Ferme Isle Saint-Jean, a sheep farm where Knit Pickers sources its local wool.  Gabriel and Deirdre Mercier have family histories of farming and award-winning cheese-making.  Together, they raise happy, healthy sheep that not only give you wonderful wool, but their milk makes the most delicious grilling cheese and yoghurt – tasty products that are not made anywhere else in the Maritimes!  Try a sample and learn a little about sheep farming, sheep’s milk cheese and yoghurt – uniquely PEI!

LAVENDER AND LACE – A LESSON IN RELAXATION

CA$65.00

The rhythmic clack of knitting needles, the soothing soft aroma of lavender and a sampling of honey wine (mead) – the perfect atmosphere for relaxation!

Take a deep breath of the fresh, salt-scented air of rural PEI.  You’re ready to discover the magical world of knitting lace!  If you’ve always been intrigued, mystified and maybe a little nervous about lace knitting, this is for you.  Spend a little time learning and practicing the simple lace techniques using beautifully soft, organically dyed wool from PEI’s Fleece and Harmony Mill.  Discover why we use lavender in our “Ewe Love” line and how you and your woolens will benefit from lavender.  You’ll take home a skein of Fleece and Harmony wool in your choice of color and an original Knit Pickers pattern for fingerless lace mittens.

We’ll visit La Serena Farm where Charles and Laura grow lavender.  Their sheep keep the farm manicured and their honey bees not only pollinate the organic fruit, they provide the honey for the farm’s award-winning meadery “The Island Honey Wine Company”.  A tour of the farm (weather permitting) will wrap up with a sampling of honey mead.  Perhaps your favorite will be Lavender Mead, a perfect accompaniment to PEI’s tasty lobster and oysters.

“Lavender and Lace” is offered every Thursday from 1 pm to 4 pm from June 21st to October 25th.  Space is limited – we suggest that you register to reserve your spot.

Price: $65.00 (+HST) per person.  Have your own double-pointed needles? Bring them along! If not – we have, available to purchase, a lovely selection of birch needles, handcrafted in Atlantic Canada.

**Note:  Basic knitting skills (how to knit and purl stitches) are required.
